"Cruel Intentions: The '90s Musical" is a vibrant and nostalgic show that successfully translates the cult classic 1999 film to the stage. While it might not delve into the complex moral ambiguities of its source material with the same depth, it delivers two high-energy, crowd-pleasing hours thanks to its '90s aesthetic and iconic soundtrack.

The musical retains the core narrative of the film, focusing on the manipulative step-siblings Sebastian Valmont (Will Callan) and Kathryn Merteuil (Nic Myers) as they engage in a twisted game of seduction and betrayal. The two engage in a cruel bet: Kathryn goads Sebastian into attempting to seduce Annette Hargrove (Abbie Budden), the headmaster's virtuous daughter.

Under Jonathan O'Boyle's direction, the transition to the stage is seamless, with the narrative unfolding at a brisk pace, ensuring that the audience remains engaged throughout. The performances are generally strong, with the cast capturing the essence of the film's characters while adding their own unique flair. The chemistry between the actors is palpable, particularly during the more intense and dramatic scenes.

However, the true star of the show is undoubtedly the soundtrack. A carefully curated selection of '90s pop hits, including Britney Spears, Boyz II Men, Christina Aguilera, TLC, R.E.M., Ace of Base, Natalie Imbruglia, The Verve, *NSYNC and more, provides the perfect backdrop to the unfolding drama, eliciting cheers and sing-alongs from the audience. The songs definitely add a layer of nostalgic charm to the production. The musical numbers are energetic and well-choreographed by Gary Lloyd, showcasing the cast's vocal and dancing abilities.

The set design and costumes by Polly Sullivan effectively capture the opulent and decadent world of the film, transporting the audience back to the late '90s. The lighting and visual effects by Nick Richings are also impressive, creating a dynamic and visually appealing stage environment. The production values are high, reflecting the professionalism and polish of the touring show.

While the musical excels in its entertainment value, it occasionally sacrifices depth for spectacle. The exploration of themes such as power, manipulation, and sexuality, which were central to the film, is somewhat diluted in the stage adaptation. The characters, while entertaining, lack some of the complexity and nuance of their cinematic counterparts. The musical leans heavily on its nostalgic appeal that can sometimes overshadow the narrative's more serious undertones.

Despite this, "Cruel Intentions: The '90s Musical" is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining theatrical experience. It's a must-see for fans of the film and anyone looking for a high-energy, nostalgic trip back to the '90s. The combination of a compelling narrative, a stellar soundtrack, and a talented cast ensures that the audience leaves the theatre with a smile on their face and a '90s tune stuck in their head.

The show is a fun, light, and very '90s experience. It is not trying to be a deep theatrical experience, but a fun night out, and it succeeds in this.
